I just wished the power ballanced 5e better and didn't do away with the biggest goal of developing a D&D character, epic play. They set arbitrary level and stat caps leaving no mathmatical way of actually facing down epic beings and evil gods. If they hadn't kneecapped play so hard, it could have easily been my favorite edition by miles.

I made it! I somewhat agree, it certainly has felt like the DnD community over the last year or so has become a bit more bitter. I also think it's because of some level of fatigue. All the people that joined around 2020 are probably old enough into the hobby of DnD to really recognise all its many faults and problems. The OGL thing was just the straw that broke the camels back. DnD needs to change again, and I think most people expect it to change again, whether they like it or rather it stays the same.

I made it. As a writer, artist, and DM that creates DND 5e homebrew campaigns and content, I can never support WOTC. They destroyed their relationship to creators with the OGL debacle. I'm never going to engage with them. I've played Pathfinder and it's fine, and I'm open to trying new systems, but my friend group I run games for are afraid of changing systems. I will continue to run homebrew 5e games due to their simple ruleset.

I made it (but I don't think you'll be reading any more comments here by now) I've been playing D&D for 30 years now and I'm ready to let go of it after the OGL. I'm actively searching (and finding) many systems I like better than D&D, but your video helped me see how I should care for all my friends that aren't and think 5e is perfect (in a time WotC is releasing another "more perfect" version of the game)

I made it (twice), and I gotta say I found what you had to say really interesting, and motivatingly positive. I've definitively felt on a bit of a rough spot with D&D and its community recently, but this does make me feel better about it, and even a little justified over my actions a bit. For starters, I began modifying D&D since day one I DMd. There's also the fact that I've always seen ttrpgs as settings by themselves. I have been constantly trying to see how to play several other systems, not from a distaste towards 5e, but from an opinion that a ttrpg made for a specific setting should be played in that setting. Starfinder for scifi, CoC for cosmic horror, fAte for Fate Stay Night, etc. I've grown a bit of a distaste for all the metagaming and truly tactical, minmaxing builds from the more experienced D&D community, but at the same time see 5e as a perfect _starting point_ for ttrpgs, and I'm always glad to bring in new irls into it. I think it's always best with newer players, at least for me. I resonate with the "D&D is a mindset" message, but I feel it applies to all ttrpgs. Because they're all _games_, they're all _fun_, we're supposed to be _playing_ and having fun, and I think someone else's fun shouldn't have any effects on our own. Just today there was some talk about a certain ruling about multiclassing on a community of dms I'm in. I argued for rule of cool, which I'm totally governed by in any game I DM, and was met with such an odd agressiveness that shut me down completely. I just was so weirded out by the fact that some great gamers out there can get so angry at the fact that people might want to play this game in a different way.

Personally, I very much like dnd, but after multiple oneshot and 5 campaigns I ended up exhausting everything I wanted from this system, and I realised how limited D&D's class system is- with two different paladins receiving the exact same benefits at level 1, 5 or 9, they didn't really feel like two different characters to me. So I'm hoping to move to other, more versatile systems, like Pathfinder where very few features are identical for two characters even if they have the same class, or cyberpunk where there are no templates like classes in the first place (Except one ability you choose depending on whether you're a solo or nomad, I guess), or Legend of the Five rings where what templates are there are an integral part of your character rather than an abstract distinction between a fighter and wizard. But right now I'm waiting until other players in my groups get border with D&D enough to try something else.

I made it. I have been playing D&D since 1990. I started with the Mentzer Red Box, moved over to AD&D 2E, adopted 3.0 very quickly in 2000, balked at adopting 3.5 when it launched in 2003 (I didn't buy a single 3.5 Core rulebook until joining a 3.5 game in late 2004), went with an open mind into 4E, dabbled in Pathfinder 1E but didn't find it enjoyable, and most importantly I participated in the D&D Next playtest which led to 5E. So I have seen this all before and have some opinions. The closest analog to the 2024 rules are 2E and 3.5. The creative team that developed 2E received a mandate from management to make the game as backwards compatible as possible. 2E, however, was not embraced by most 1E players. It found a few new players, like me, but the hard core AD&D players played 1E, perhaps with some 2E products mixed in. Ben Riggs, author of Slaying the Dragon, has sales figures showing how 2E sold relative to 1E and Basic D&D. The picture he painted was of a dwindling market share, and a company that didn't do market research and therefore didn't know what products to sell. By contrast, Wizards of the Coast has done a lot of market research, but at the end of the day, they are answerable to the whims of Hasbro. 3.5 was released because sales were flagging in a market oversaturated with cheap OGL cash grabs. I could tell that I was being asked to repurchase the Core Rulebooks, didn't know the reason why at the time, and I refused. It wasn't until I joined a short-lived home game that I bought the 3.5 books. I later joined an Organized Play community playing Living Greyhawk, which I played from 2005 to the bitter end in 2008. A lot of the people I played with refused to try 4E, and later when Pathfinder was announced, they joined in droves. It was hard to find players for D&D during the 4E days. I think partially this was due to long-time players hating it, but also due to competition from MMOs. It wasn't until the last ten years that D&D slowly benefitted from Stranger Things and Critical Role, that the hobby suddenly began to feel more robust. 5E definitely benefitted from this. If not for the OGL fiasco last January, I would probably be more optimistic about the future of the hobby. But I'm not. Between financial issues and general satisfaction with the 2014 rules, I'm in no hurry to buy the 2024 Core Rulebooks. I won't badmouth anyone who does decide they like the updated rules, I certainly won't bully anyone who does. But I view this with the feeling that I've seen this all play out before. Anyway, those are my thoughts.

I made it. I think that your perspective is colored by manufactured drama. I have cut myself off from the largest social media hubs discussing this game because I recognized that the community, without thought or conscious effort, became primed to see controversy anywhere and everywhere. This is of course based on personal preference, but for every OGL 'deauthorization' or Frostmourn AI Art, it feels like there are 50 imagined slights that do not come to pass. Every week someone is accusing an artist of using AI, only to learn that the fanbase really don't understand art enough to make these kinds of accusations and perceived imperfections that were put there on purpose as part of someone who knows their craft so well that an oddity in isolation is essential to the whole composition. I don't think WotC is making controversies every week, but I do think there are things we should be vigilant for. However the move to creative commons has absolutely fixed everything that I felt was wrong with the direction of the next edition of D&D. I also see quiet backpeddling from WotC on their 3d tabletop platform. But most of all, I think the people who make this game are intelligent and they've been doing their level best to make an improvement to the rules, and that any perceived incompetence in the revision are a result of their collective decision to adhere to the legacy of D&D. This was true during the dndnext playtest, and it remains true now. There are a set of knowing compromises made by the dev team in an attempt to retain what is 'recognizably d&d' in the new rules that have to live alongside their efforts to improve the game. I do think people should try other games, particularly if people are frustrated with D&D. I hope those people find games that help them channel their joy into this hobby, but if they don't I hope that they realize that they don't like those other systems either. I've seen this occur with my own journey into PF2e (which mirrored yours) coinciding with a marked increase in negativity in their social media spaces. Witnessing that shift is what made me realize how much toxic fandom has taken control of the largest social media places for D&D. This is quite a pickle for people like yourself, because your living is based on what sells. The most engaged part of your fanbase are inundated with negativity such that it's becoming normalized. I am optimistic that as the revised books come out, and people see how much better they are for running fun and engaging games, people will quietly accept that the catastrophizing of D&D news is silly. But I won't be part of that myself. I'm sitting out of the major social media gather places, and I'm finding people I like interacting with in order to share our love for this game. I hope you can find a balancing point in your own relationship to this media and the fanbase as well.

I made it, and all of your points were very eloquently put. Sometimes "fuck X company/person that made this thing" can translate into weird emotions that you can't quite put down in words and don't know to whom you should direct them towards, so it might ruin the community or the game for you. Thank you for separating clearly the many weird feelings I've had mixed together in my mind. In the end, IMO, DnD 5e is still good, still flawed, not for everybody, and I desperately need a break from it, but it's a good game (or you can make it so). The community is a mixed bag as any community is. Luckily i don't care for it. Still fuck Hasbro tho, I'm not gonna back off on that, a lot of the reasons I don't wanna play right now is their fault. But if you do want to play DnD, go play DnD, no one can ruin it.

I made it. Honestly, I'm really sad about how the TTRPG community treats 5e and it's players, because I and many people I know who love 5e still do love other systems. I'm helping a DM make his own system based on the Monster Hunter games, I desperately want to play CoC and VtM, and many other systems look so fun. But you know what system I can never play? Pathfinder. I'd love to, it looks interesting, but every time I see it brought up is in counter to a system I have loved for years, that introduced me to TTRPGs, and, despite its jank and WotC's issues, I really love. I love forgotten realms lore, I love the community of homebrew and house rules, and I love the intense history of what DND was and what DND can become, even if I don't like the new rules. Ultimately, Pathfinder is not just a DND replacement. It has rules and elements that many players won't be comfortable with. Other roleplay-based TTRPGs have too many roles and rules for roleplay, which I prefer to be more intuitive and conversational. I love DND because it's what I want from a basic game, and is a good slate to build on. And, honestly, I don't need a reason. I love DND because I love DND. It's a fact of how fandom and community is online, but it's still sad.

I made it. I've always wanted to start playing D&D, and I finally did it in 2021. One session as a player and the 99% of the time as a DM. I love the game and love to introduce the game to new people. Now, it's a difficult process sometimes, mostly because of the language barrier. I'm from a spanish speaking country, but I don't have issues understanding the english content. I mostly see english speaking channels about the game and I have all of my D&D books in english. And a lot of the people (not all of them) that I tried to introduce to the game rather have all the content in spanish. That made me want to start creating videos about D&D in spanish, explaining all the new stuff while also talking about the basics. I've seen other spanish videos about that, but I wanted to do it in a more concise way. But between don't having a good idea of HOW to do that and some personal stuff, I haven't started to make that idea a reality. And then, all the OGL thing happenned. I am very tired of watching any youtube video about D&D and see at least 1 comment saying "Pathfinder is better" or "They copy/pasted that from this other TTRPG". I get the frustration of people, but I already deal with a lot of "3.5 was better" between people who had played D&D for years here where I live. I apologize for any spelling errors in this comment. I still want to make those videos and maybe find a good niche for me as a youtuber creator someday, and I also wanted to share a little of my experience here. Love your videos Blaine Simple. And I hope that I get to see you making more for a long time.

I made it. While the editing and pacing of this video wreaked havoc on me because of the way my brain works, I do appreciate the metaphor. So, respectful applause. Personally, I'm someone that is always willing to try something new, and likes playing many different systems. I've found very few in the community that share this opinion with me, but that is ok. The greatest thing about this hobby is that, there actually really is something for everyone. And that is thing I feel that certain people miss. That there is something for everyone, but it won't be the same thing. There will never be a perfect system. One system is not better than another. This is because everybody is looking for their own thing and it can be wildly different for different people. And this is what I like about D&D and the community. D&D brought a lot of people into the hobby, and there were many different expectations among them. Then once they got their feet wet, so to say, they learned what they liked and what they didn't. So, they'll find a D&D game that caters to their taste, or a new system that does. All of this makes the community and the hobby as a whole stronger. As far as quitting D&D over WotC's behavior... well I can see that. If there actions spoiled the game for you, and you want to find something else... I support you and wish you luck and happiness. And if you still want to stick with D&D even considering how they have acted... same thing, I support you and wish you luck and happiness. If you still want to buy their products, well there are much more serious things in the world for me to worry about. Do I hope you would still acknowledge WotC's bad behavior, but you do you. Though please remember... We won so hard during the OGL dispute, that you can now play 5e without ever buying or pirating a WotC product. The core rules are in Creative Commons and there is a very robust and fun market of 3rd party content for the game. I can not stress this enough.

I Made It. I was with you right up until you said that D&D was practically perfect. The reason all these other games exist is that No game is perfect. D&D does one thing really well: High fantasy medieval combat. with a bit of tweaking you can make it do some other things pretty well but the further you get from the thing it does best, the worse the experience gets. That's why people came up with Shadowrun and World of Darkness and Call of Cthulhu. They allow us to tell stories that D&D isn't suited for. I've been playing TTRPG's for over 30 years now. My first game was Advanced Fighting Fantasy. I didn't play my first game of D&D until several years later. These days I play 5E D&D almost exclusively because most of the players I can find don't want to play anything else and think it's strange that I say Games Master instead of Dungeon Master. The ubiquity of 5E D&D seems to have become a limiting factor on what was once a much more open and expansive hobby.

I made it. I glad you are still enjoying D&D and sad to hear that you didn't like Pathfinder as much. I've played D&D since 3rd edition and a few other systems including World of Darkness and Hero System. For me the base rules are less important playing with people you call friends. Being able to problem solve a trap laiden dungeon or using a Noble's political machinations to be thier down fall or boarding a starship to seize it and become space pirates. Being able set up and play out those scenes is what I enjoy. If you are able to be with friends and have fun then you succeed at playing a TTRPG. You talked about how for some people it can be a big deal to move from one rule set to another potentially also starting with an entirely group of people and that can be daunting, to me it's not. GM privilege I guess. It also sounds like some of your decision was based on you YT channel and how being more on the main "trunk" (as you described it), of D&D is important. I do understand how off the main stream it's all trickles. As a DM who ussually spend more money on this hobby then players and because I'm not tied down to a rule set I feel other aspects can and sometime should be looked at before I spend money. And I feel more comfortable with a company like Paizo who wants to make sure future company CEO or Boards of Directors can't just up and change the licenses because they see the products as "Under Monetized".

Well, I made it, and while I don't like WotC for what they tried to do and are doing, I can't write off a hobby that's been part of my life for so many years and brought me so much joy. I started with 5E, the beginning, raised on stories of TTRPGs told by my own father, a man who started DMing 1st Edition. His style influences my games and yet I've made it all my own, but I feel he impressed a lesson on me that I've carried through all my games as a DM and a Player: "You don't have to use the rules you don't like. It's YOUR game. Play it how you want, tel the story that you want, use the Rules you want, and if you don't like a ruling, make a new one." I've strived to teach other DMs that as well, to mixed results. I'll look at the new rules, and if I don't like them, I won't use them. WotC can get me on its VTT when it makes it better than pen and paper, or the myriad other VTTs out there. D&D survived the fall of TSR, it'll survive WotC, as long as we remember one simple lesson passed down to us from Wargame to Tabletop, player to player, hand to hand: "Bear in mind the principle that anything can be attempted." We're all Grognards now.

I made it. I will admit that I'm an outsider here. I have played a decent amount of ttrpg systems and only played DnD a couple of times. Hell, my full introduction to the hobby outside some short-form indies was Dark Eye, not DnD. To some extent, ttrpgs are actually an extension of my interest in board games than a specific interest by itself. So I'm okay with playing different systems (the same way that I play different boardgames). So, from my personal position, I do recommend playing other systems. But, as someone who has friends who are deep into Magic or 40K and won't touch any other card game or wargame, I understand that for a lot of people, their hobby isn't ttrpgs, but DnD. The same way that my friends' hobby isn't card games or wargaming, but Magic or 40K. And that's completely okay. My message is that there are systems faaar more simple than DnD (let alone Pathfinder) that will probably be very easy to get into for an afternoon or two. For example, the rulebook for Cairn, a game that I really like, is only 18 pages long and has a lot of one-shots available only for free or a small fee. So you can play it in no time. The majority of them will be just something you experience once or twice. But maybe you will find a system that does what you like about DnD better than DnD. Or not. Again, playing only DnD is completely valid. And playing other systems and seeing what they do differently (be it for the better or for the worse) might help you appreciate more what DnD does well in comparison.

I made it. My D&D group isn't really affected by most of the drama. We just play with the rules that work best. The only thing that upset me personally was the ogl drama, and my upset was on behalf of D&D creators. I'm glad most of you came through it okay.

I made it. I often compare content creators to food channels. Because you can only make a video on a recipe onces. What do you make when you've created a video on all the recipes that are personal to you? You can stop, or start making nicher and nicher recipes of foods you probably rarely even eat. Same thing with D&D. There's a bit of wisdom, I think, in learning to literally 'get over it'. You don't have to learn other systems, but it helps. I dove down the anti-D&D well and got so deep I came right back up to the top again, learning to love it in a new light. Strange how that happens huh?

i made it. as someone who played dnd for 3 or 4 years, i will say this: dnd is an amazing game, and theres good reason why it became so big. the thing is, any of the "bad" things about dnd people use as the reason to stop playing dnd can be avoided or just ignored. problems with the mechanics: just make whatever changes you feel are necessary. problems with the community: just focus on the group of people you play with and thats it. you dont want to financially support Wotc: you can easily play dnd without giving them money, like buying 3rd party content. like i wrote in the beggining, dnd is an amazing game. regardless of the game you play, any of them can bring people together and build amazing communities. and thats what makes ttrpgs so amazing, in my opinion.

"I made it" - Don't really care for passwords. After seeing what the game hobby had and between the semi insular positivity or the people who sit down to complain or make the game worse off for their interpretations of how the game should be played, it's equally difficult to run for an apathetic or transient crowd. Friendship is not a dime a dozen but many in the rough who never will be polished enough to see the light shine through till long after. It made me burn out several times that this was the case and that nobody had a consistent opinion or reason of playing. The most frustrating thing in the world was hearing about the various ways to improve but nobody cares except you. There's only so much you can ignore before you give up and move on because of the amount of hatred & spite you feel for those that remained. Is it their fault? Nah. You did it to yourself some would say. Reading too much into it is definitely a downfall of many hobbies similar to tabletop. I've been gravitating back towards handyman work and labor as a form of escapism because as time goes on there's less reason to ever indulge in it. Only people that are seeking detachment from how shitty life is seek out the ever critical eye of scrutiny away from the public. That's where I was for several years while trying to enjoy the hobby. Almost as if I wanted to be better but specifically mentoring myself in how to run the game. I don't regret the time spent learning, but I could've done so without having heard, listened to or bothering with many of the things that society says and having taken a good majority of it to heart with what made sense. It may seem unrelated, but how you grow up and interpret the things around you leads to your different enjoyment of various things until you are capable of learning how not to let it influence your thoughts as much. Tabletop was a growing pain and I've taken a hiatus since Dec. When I ran my last game, I did still have leftover spite from dealing with people who made their games intolerably slow or passively playable. I can safely say I prefer activity over not, meaningful decisions made by people who are engaged but the reasons for people to be that way are a lot clearer to myself now than they were before and instead of indifferent apathetic or spiteful attitude it's now like observing a murky polished surface. It might be glossy but the reflection is missing kinda deal.

I made it. I wanted to hear what you had to say. Personally as DM, I run a chimeric game of DND 5E, Pathfinder, Lion and Dragon, and mix in a lot of homebrew. It works for me and my players and that’s what matters to us. Perfect? No. But the point for us is the fun we have every Friday night. I’m at the top of a different mountain, but I am happy to wave and smile at those who climbed different mountains.

I made it. I'm currently in the midst of 2 months long dnd games with a bunch of friends. I wouldn't give it up for any other system. I've tried pathfinder, and it's good, but for a less combat oriented and rules light game, it doesn't have that much going for it over 5e. I've had lots of people I know jump off the hasbro train or whatever, and honestly, I get it. I seriously considered the same. But at this point, the community I've built in dnd has basically separated from the actual game, with a majority of our games being rooted in homebrew, both of our own design as well as creators such as pointy hat. I truly don't care what other people try and convince me at this point. I hate the corporate environment of hasbro, but I've never bought anything from them, so I owe them nothing, nor do I owe anyone else. My main priority has and will always be my enjoyment and that of my players. Thanks for this insightful video, definitely lost track watching the pot guy a couple times but gave me a good opportunity for thought. Hope you're doing well.

I made it, and I wish I had something more useful to say. I agree with the thought alone of having to learn an entirely new system seems exhausting to me. But that's just right now. I've played other systems before and I'm sure at some point, I'll get bored or burnt out of running 5E for my group and will look at something new. I highly doubt any of my players would refuse to play something else than 5E. Until then, I'll just keep adding things from other games or modifying 5E rules so they fit my (and my players') taste better. I have to disagree on the thing about that making videos that "rarely add any information that hasn't been said in other videos" part. Just because other videos on the same topic exist doesn't mean everyone has seen or stumbled upon them yet. I think those videos are completely valid and - if anything - can serve to initiate new people into the game or TTRPGs in general. Hope you personally are still having fun with the hobby and are not getting burnt out with making videos. I for one would also watch some videos of you on other topics.

I made it! ♥ ... and I have to say, a part of this reminded me of a conversation I had with a friend past the OGL scandal, who expressed critical cynicism towards businesses that break the trust of their community base. Their objective stance was that they can only afford to move on from the game while encouraging others to do the same because successful business practices that manipulate or exploit their community for financial and/or other gain are no longer worthy of the trust, attention or passion of its community - though they calmly explained this without any aggression or malice towards D&D. Their understanding is that by continuing to trust in a disreputable business, and allow it to flourish further, you allow them to continue perpetrating unfair or malicious business practices. Vote with your wallet, essentially. I can appreciate and respect their logic on the matter, but I personally couldn't turn away from D&D even after the OGL scandal (though I did unsubscribe at the time). For those friends of mine who know me well, one key thing about who I am is my sense of hope and positivity for better times, better people, fairer systems and ideals, etc. So, naturally I continue to put my hope into WOTC, that they and their business rulings under Hasbro do not take advantage of we - the D&D Community - in such intolerable ways ever again. But, as I am so often challenged: Am I being... naïve? I'd like to believe that I am not merely naïve, but rather that my hope is a source of motivation towards valuing the things that are good and fair - not a blind sense of optimism being misplaced in something unworthy of it. I temper my expectations realistically. I do feel that WOTC is striving to regain our trust and cast Mending on the fragmented splinters of we who continue to support them, and I no longer see any signs of the damaging PR responses WOTC had during the OGL scandal. I cannot ever know for certain what machinations lie behind the executive level functions of WOTC or Hasbro, but I'd like to believe they will listen to their workers, listen to their community and communicate their (better) intentions from here onward. Thank you for this video, Blaine Simple - I hope your climb up both the mountains of D&D Community, as well as that literal one in the game you played, give rise to a sense of relief, accomplishment or at least some lasting contentment.

I made it. But in all honesty, I don't have much to say aside from the fact that I appreciate the fact that you're doing your very best Blaine. Keep up the good work however you can possibly imagine it! Even if you run out of topic to bring up, maybe try to dip back and forth between what's popular and what kickstarted your channel's popularity to begin with, such as the Infinite AC in D&D, or "X in D&D". The stuff that you're known for might not stick around forever, but know that I appreciate the work you put in to your videos!

I made it. I think we are on the precipice of a new and exciting time for the hobby. The TTRPG hobby is not WoTC and it's not even D&D. The OGL Debacle set a whole bunch of changes in motion. The largest D&D publishers operating under the OGL, decided they couldn't trust their livelihoods to a company that might suddenly double-cross them out of existence so they made their own games. Paizo revamped Pathfinder 2e and Starfinder. Kobold Press released Tales of the Valiant. MCDM has their game. Daggerheart is Critical Role's offering. DC20 is currently generating a lot of excitement. The rules of any of these systems are just the maintain fairness while also injecting uncertainty for our shared fantasies. The dust hasn't settled from the OGL debacle and with WoTC;s continued questionable business practices, they haven't given it a chance to settle without stirring it all up again. The hobby will stabilize. We may be on the brink of a new era where no one, single rules set dominates the landscape. If that comes to pass, I think it's a good thing. It makes our hobby more diverse and vibrant. I'm a old time veteran of the hobby, but I try not to be a grumbler. My advice it to try new things. Go for it! Find what works at your table for you and your players. Ultimately, that's all that matters. Memes are fun and a large community is astounding. Editions don't ultimately dictate what is or isn't fun for our hobby. The greatest game I ever ran lasted 3 1/2 years and we were playing 1st Edition Legend of the Five Rings (L5R). My players and I have told incredible stories together with heart, drama, plot twists, tragedy, joy, and satisfaction. The rules systems come and go. The stories we tell are what we cherish and hold on to. I know this is long, but I hope it helps with the frustration to know that the community is great, but our games matter more than rules, editions, and controversies.

I made it. Tbh. I feel like whenever I try to bring up something in youtubers commented section about xyz about dnd having issues. It feels like I get ignored or censored. My frustration with 5e has gotten to the point where I'm doing the equivalent of Luther nailing a list of complaints to a door. Its a Google doc outlying every problem 5e has going on and WOTC or nobody else addresses. I'm not just making this doc out of frustration, but passion too. I genuinely want 5e/5.5e to succeed. But wotc's greed and incompentnce has been an issue.
